It’s truly important to us to ensure that we’re giving out accurate information when it comes to animals’ health.

There has been a lot of recent debate about the correct diet for one of Britain’s most loved pets – the rabbit. The debate is whether or not rabbits should be fed a pellet or a muesli dried food; this is what we think:

- The dried food makes up a very small percentage of the rabbit’s diet, so first things first, get the proportions right – the diet should consist of around 70+% good quality hay, greens, dried food and water.

- Make sure you don’t overfeed dry food, remember that the majority of the diet should be hay. Rabbits have 28 teeth (most of them further back in the mouth) and they all grow continuously so the grinding of the hay helps to prevent them growing too long. Overfeeding dry food can also lead to obesity, which in turn can lead to digestive problems.

- If your rabbit selective feeds (picks out the bits they like best), then we recommend that you feed a pelleted food as selective feeding can lead to nutritional deficiencies.

- Rabbits are fibrevors and therefore the key to appropriate feeding is fibre! Make sure whichever type of food you choose is high in fibre and fed alongside plenty of hay.

- Health check your rabbit regularly for signs of health issues.

- We stock many good quality pelleted foods for every stage of your rabbit’s life.

Although there has been some recent research into which type of food is best for rabbits, the research has not yet been verified. We will be keeping thoroughly up to date with the results.
